Hydrogen-Poor Disks in Compact X-Ray Binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that accretion disks in several compact X-ray binaries with hydrogen– depleted donors are likely subject to a thermal ionization instability, unless they are strongly irradiated. These disks are particularly interesting in that their MHDturbulent properties in the neutral phase may be quite different from those of standard, hydrogen–rich disks. subject headings: X-ray: stars – accretion, accretion disks – MHD – turbulence

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملUltra-compact (X-ray) binaries
A short review of ultra-compact binaries, focused on ultra-compact X-ray binaries, is followed by a discussion of recent results of our VLT campaign to obtain optical spectra of (candidate) ultra-compact X-ray binaries. We find evidence for carbon/oxygen as well as helium/nitrogen discs and no evidence for (traces) of hydrogen. This suggests that the donors in the observed systems are white dwa...
متن کاملOptical spectra of the carbon - oxygen accretion discs in the ultra - compact X - ray binaries 4 U 0614 + 09 , 4 U 1543 - 624 and 2 S 0918 - 549
We present optical spectra in the range 4600 – 8600 Å for three low-mass X-ray binaries which have been suggested to belong to the class of ultra-compact X-ray binaries based on their X-ray spectra. Our spectra show no evidence for hydrogen or helium emission lines, as are seen in classical X-ray binaries. The spectrum of 4U 0614+09 does show emission lines which we identify with carbon and oxy...
متن کاملStability of helium accretion discs in ultracompact binaries
Context. Stellar companions of accreting neutron stars in ultra compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are hydrogen-deficient. Their helium or C/O accretion discs are strongly X-ray irradiated. Both the chemical composition and irradiation determine the disc stability with respect to thermal and viscous perturbations. At shorter periods, UCXBs are persistent, whereas longer-period systems are mostly tr...
متن کاملSix new candidate ultracompact X - ray binaries
Ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) appear able to sustain accretion onto the compact accretor at rates lower than in wider X-ray binaries. This may be understood by the smaller accretion disks in UCXBs: a lower X-ray luminosity suffices to keep a disk completely ionized through irradiation and, thus, keep the viscosity at a sufficiently high level to allow effective transport of matter to the ...
